From the very beginning of human history on Earth, groups of people have been interacting and forming relations with each other in different ways Sometimes, these interactions have little or no effect. But other times, they can leave long lasting scars on human society and create divisions on a global scale that continue to persist over time.
The cultures we have created, shaped over time by a history of struggle and conflict, can in return cause people to turn against each other- and they may not even realise it.
These age-old rifts can manifest in the subtlest of ways- perhaps in the form of a thoughtless, passing comment; or a particular reaction to a certain phrase. But most of all, the way these divisions rear their ugly heads in our society is through discrimination.
Whether physical, verbal, mental, or through any other means conceivable by humankind, these opinions still exist today- and they can still create the same animosities between peoples. This is modern-day racial discrimination, and this is ‘The Truth’.
Our podcast aims to address this by examining the effects of particular forms of discrimination on individuals and then on the world, i.e. the number of people who have had to deal with such prejudice, other subsequent effects, regions concerned, and so on.
Our idea on how to carry out this task would be to carry out an interview with a different person each podcast episode, with the incentive of answering the underlying question: What forms of racial discrimination do you identify in or against your culture, religion, ethnic group, et cetera?
Following this interview, we discuss the global context of the individual’s narrative and explain why this is something to be aware of. We hope that, by doing so, listeners will realise the effects of racial discrimination and why illiberality in all forms should be recognised and condemned.
It’s true that we can’t simply erase thousands of years of history and wipe the slate clean to start anew; but under no circumstance does that mean we can’t start taking the first steps in order to start repairing these rifts between humans in the present- little by little, person by person.
In this particular podcast, our host will be interviewing a Qatari student on an incident that occurred during a family vacation. It is our sincere hope that the debut of this podcast, ‘The Truth’, succeeds in bringing to light one of the most despicable things human society has ever spawned- racial discrimination- and define precisely why we should be aware of it.
